Marafa Depression (Hell’s Kitchen) Sunset Tour

Safari Overview

Venture into the heart of Kenya’s coastal hinterland with a magical visit to the Marafa Depression, famously known as Hell’s Kitchen — a surreal sandstone canyon located just outside Malindi. Sculpted by centuries of wind and rain erosion, the gorge reveals striking layers of red, orange, pink, and white rock that shift in color as the sun begins to set.

This Sunset Tour offers the most breathtaking time to explore the area, when the formations are bathed in golden light and the temperature begins to cool. Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll learn about the geological history of the depression, local myths and legends surrounding its creation, and the cultural significance it holds for the Giriama people.

As the sun dips below the horizon, the canyon glows in deep reds and purples — a photographer’s dream and a soul-stirring moment in one of Kenya’s most underrated natural wonders.
